Capture Higher Ed is proud to introduce one of our newest partners, Mississippi State University, a public research university located in Oktibbeha County in north-central Mississippi. Its campus is located adjacent to Starkville, a growing city of nearly 24,000.
With a system-wide enrollment of nearly 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students, MSU is a comprehensive, doctoral degree-granting institution with a nationally and internationally diverse student body.
Established in 1878, the university was founded as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi and was one of the national land-grant entities created by the U.S. Congress. The Mississippi Legislature gave the new university a mission to provide training in “agriculture, horticulture and the mechanical arts . . . without excluding other scientific and classical studies, including military tactics.”
The new college received its first students in the fall of 1880; its first president was former Civil War general Stephen D. Lee.
Throughout its early the years, the college’s mission was extended through federal legislation that funded and supported agricultural experimentation, the creation of statewide extension offices and the teacher training. The state legislature changed the college’s name to Mississippi State College in 1932; and then to Mississippi State University in 1958.
Today, MSU provides the academic, leadership and social opportunities to help students excel. Through its excellent academics, top-notch research and impressive points of pride as well as colorful traditions and elite Southeastern Conference athletics, MSU students receive a breadth of opportunities and experiences that last a lifetime.
As a land-grant institution, MSU is dedicated to three broad purposes: learning, research and service. Learning to enhance the intellectual, cultural, social and professional development of students; research to extend knowledge and bring deeper insight, understanding, and usefulness to existing knowledge; and service to apply knowledge and the fruits of research to the lives of people.
Fulfilling these purposes is the primary goal of the colleges and degree programs that make up the total university. We are proud to welcome Mississippi State University into the Capture family of partners.
