Day 2 of INNOVATE 2023, Capture Higher Ed’s virtual conference for enrollment marketing recruiters this past December, opened with a keynote by Jeremy Tiers, senior director at Tudor Collegiate Strategies and host of “Mission Admissions,” an essential higher education podcast featuring conversations with industry leaders on the pressing issues of the day.
For almost a decade, Tiers has helped thousands of college and university admissions and marketing professionals become better recruiters, communicators, writers and leaders through comprehensive training workshops, yearlong training programs and 1-on-1 mentoring.
He opened his INNOVATE presentation by acknowledging a common difficulty with professional development.
“Too often we go to professional development trainings, or we come to events like this, and we take pages of notes,” he says. We think about things. We even talk with people about things. But then we put off taking action. Why is that? Why do we get stuck in such a fixed mindset?”
He’s found that it’s a combination of two things: a fear of failure and discomfort around the process of making change.
“It’s hard to grow when everything is status quo,” he says. “I want you to know that it’s OK to be uncomfortable. It’s OK to have fears and concerns; we all have them. But if we don’t address them, we limit our growth, our level of impact and our personal and professional success.
“Anytime you ever want to overcome a fear or concern, the first thing you have to do is acknowledge it exists. And then it’s important to reframe your mind and think about it differently. Our mindset is one of the most powerful tools we all have. It literally determines how we show up every single day.”
Tiers has led sessions and served as the keynote speaker at numerous NACAC affiliate conferences. He’s also spoken at the NACAC National Conference, eduWeb Digital Summit, the AMA Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education, and HighEdWeb.
